Newsletter 5, Term 2 Week 6

Wednesday 31 May 2023

We are so lucky to have friends of the school, volunteers who give so much of their time to help our school. Lynnda and Tony Bouzaid have again donated a collection of native trees to grow on our bank, proudly planted by Ahi students. We hope that in years to come they’ll be able to say “That’s the tree I planted when I was in Year 6”.

Student Participation in Local Events

Over the last few weeks over 90 students from our school have participated in cross country at Grenada North or Amesbury, as well as the inaugural tabloid sports day for senior students held at NIS. These events are an opportunity for our students to meet and play with/against students from other primary schools in Newlands, as well as the wider Wellington region. Something we are so proud of was the way in which our children not only participated, but how they helped each other, as well as students from other schools. Congratulations to all participants, with special mention to Curtis, who has gained a place at the Regional Cross Country event to be held soon. Our huge thanks to Avi Jayasekara, Ian Svela and the many parents who helped with transport and washing school sports shirts. This weekend’s job – clean the muddy imprints still on the back seats of my car!

3-Way Conference Feedback

The turnout for this term’s 3-Way Conference meetings with parents and students was amazing! Thank you for making the time to meet with your child’s teacher, as the home & school partnership is one of THE most important things that you can do to help your child thrive as a learner.

As always, we are interested in gaining feedback from our parents so that we can continue to deliver quality, timely information about your child. This week expect a Survey Monkey to arrive in your inbox, asking for your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to complete this and for those who would like to go into the draw to win a $30 NW voucher, please include your contact details.

Bike & Athletics Track – Green Light!

Exciting news – all going well, the Bike Track and top field drainage work is due to begin 12 June. We are hopeful that the weather will allow completion within 5 weeks. Please do not enter the top field site during this time as there will be heavy machinery in action.  At the same time, we are expecting the steps connecting the lower school site to the top field will also be upgraded. This will mean that there will be construction materials and machinery around the bottom court area that we need to be aware of too. We think that the inconvenience will be worth it in the end!

King’s Birthday Public Holiday

Remember that there is a public holiday next week on Monday 5 June – King’s Holiday – and school will be closed.

Driver Behaviour

We are receiving phone calls from neighbours with complaints about our parent drivers parking on grass verges and driving dangerously. They are taking photos and passing these onto the police. Please do not pick up children from the staff carpark or driveway between 8-9am and 2.30-3.30pm – this is a NO-GO ZONE for student pedestrians at all times!

Wacky Hair Day

Our Student Leaders are organizing a Wacky Hair Day for the whole school in the last week of term on Thursday 29 June. We are doing this because we think everyone needs a little fun in their lives and we all deserve it, as we have worked very hard this term. So, on the day, come prepared and expect to see some really crazy styles. Certificates will be awarded for the ones that we really love.

Our student leaders have also raised enough money to buy the second bike for our fleet – thank you to all those who purchased Juicies ice-blocks in terms 4 & 1!

From your Student Leaders: Arlo, Chloe, Dash, Isaac D, Isaac L, Indie & Mia.

Gymnastics Programme at Rewa Rewa School

EasySwim is providing a weekly gymnastics programme for our whole school this term and our students are loving it. These lessons are being paid for by a grant from Nuku Ora, so there will be no cost to parents. We thank them for their sponsorship.

Teacher Only Day Friday 02 June – School Closed

All teachers and teacher aides from each of the Newlands/Paparangi primary schools and intermediate are spending this Friday workshopping on teaching programmes being successfully undertaken at their respective schools. The workshop that Rewa Rewa School is running is about The Resilience Project (TRP) and how this helps us to support student wellbeing.

We have just received our 2023 TRP results from Melbourne University. Lead teachers and staff will be attending ZOOM sessions with TRP facilitators and key themes from this data will then be shared with the Board and parent community. It will be very interesting to see how this compares with the themes from 2022 data.

Hall Mural

You may have noticed the new mural which has recently appeared on our school hall.  This wonderful piece of artwork has been designed and painted by Todd Wano, our school kaumatua.  We are so grateful to Todd for the hours of work he has put into this very special addition to our school.  There will be an official ceremony to recognize and celebrate this before the end of term – further details soon!

Welcome to Arthur, Kayal, KC & Ken, along with their families.  We hope you enjoy learning at Rewa Rewa School!

Fun movie night opportunity for the whole family!
