Meet the teacher BBQ
Thanks Guys - that was the best one yet (we've been to 4 now)
Great that the teachers had something prepared to say - answered lots of questions in one go and nice to hear a bit about the people who spend so much time with our children.

2012 Stationery Lists
Hi there,
Could you please put the 2012 Stationery lists up on the website??
(esp year 5)
Many thanks
Stationery Lists
You'll find the stationery lists under Information/Information Booklet - on the last page.
Production - Bad Jelly the witch
It was fabulous! Thanks to all the children for their hard work. Thanks to the staff for all their hard work and the fun (getting the children to keep it all secret, the great script, costumes, set, effects, music and lyrics, and making being in the choir fun!)
Watch the local papers over the next couple of weeks for write ups about it (the Northern Courier and the CityLife Independent Herald especially - where you will probably see our Christmas Parade Fair stall too!)
Have a great break everyone.
We're looking forward to another exciting year in 2012!

Fundraising Calendars
Here is your Christmas present solution!
We have extended the deadline for orders until Wednesday 26 October (the 1st week back at school) - order forms came home on last day of term and we have spares in the office.
You can choose the picture produced by your child and teacher (displayed at Celebration of learning or now in a folder in the office) or supply your own photo to go on a calendar, diary, mousemat and greeting cards.
Another idea I heard was to take a photo of the children's 'Paint my house' artwork and submit that as your choice for the product.
You can choose as many of each item as you like (e.g. a calendar for each set of Grandparents).
There are samples of the products in the office for you to view.
We expect the orders to be delivered week 4 of term 4 – in time for international mailing dates for Christmas.
Thanks for helping us raise money for some great resources for your child's school!

School Fair 2011
Wow. What a fantastic day. Well done to all involved in making the school fair such a fun and enjoyable time for all. It just goes to show that a small school can pull of a great event!! Here's hoping next years is bigger and better with a lot more volunteers .... My husband is on the board of trustees and was involved with the fundraising committee and I know how much work was put in by all at the school. Big thumbs up and thanks to Linda the fundraising leader and the team :-)
Well done guys.
Ann-Marie :-)
Retaining Years 7 and 8
Kia ora
I see the intermediate school is having an information evening soon and was wondering what was done at our school?
I have children in the junior school but like the idea of them staying for years 7 and 8 as I see the benefits of that but if too few children stay we may have to look at intermediate school.
I think people make their minds up quite early in the schooling so getting information to parents when their children in Juniors may persuade them to keep their children here (and I think having a good size group of 7 and 8s above them in the school will also help parents expect to keep their children here.)
This is probably stuff you are onto but here are my ideas anyway!
Retaining years 7 and 8 ideas
• get past pupils and parents to talk or write a letter why it was good to stay and maybe note some of the challenges? (I recently met one Mum who raves about how her daughter is doing at college socially and academically after doing her 7&8 years at Rewa Rewa)
• retain senior teachers so parents know what to expect in those years (continuity)
• give information to parents early about staying (when in years 3 and 4?) so they expect to stay
• tell parents how the needs of a successful transition to college are met (eg. academic stuff – does our schools ask year 9 college teachers what the children need to know when they arrive at college and base their teaching around that) (social stuff – does our school visit a college classroom in action?)
• Advertise reasons it is good to stay on
*smaller class numbers mean more opportunity to lead
*smaller class numbers mean more attention from teacher
*smaller class numbers mean children learn to get on with people different to themselves as may be no one like them (great life skill!)
*Smaller numbers mean more opportunity for short notice excursions, different types of activities that relate to individual children’s interests and learning style
As you can seem my knowledge is limited so I dare say other parents are the same.

Celebration Of Learning
Thank you to all the students and staff for a highly entertaining celebration of learning yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed the contribution from each class, and even learned a few things about space I didn't know before!
Great effort everyone - I hope you all enjoy a well-deserved break.

Policy review comments
Look fine to me just 2 comments
Pupil Placement
“All parents will be informed of each child’s class for the following year, in the end of year reports.”
Should it also include informing parents of each child’s class for the "following term" if this is to change during the year.
and a comment on the implementation rather than the policy itself
Maori Community
I notice “Care should be taken to pronounce Maori names correctly.”
It would be cool if we could try to have all staff saying the school name correctly (which may be catchy)
I understand “e” is pronounced ‘ear’ so I think we should be saying:
“rearwa rearwa” school – maybe check with local Maori people to see if that is correct
Bright Future for Rewa Rewa School
I am very proud to be associated with Rewa Rewa School. Even with the challenges that have faced the school from Term 4 2009 amazing things have happened. In a short year everyone worked so hard to ensure we had a fantastic ERO report.
We have the very best Teachers, Principal, Support Staff and Board to build on the successes we have made to date.
Our children come home with excitement and enthusiasm from the very first day of term and this has not diminished as the term progresses.
If there is anyone keen to join the board we would love to hear from you. My personal experience to date has given me the confidence to recently enter back into the full time workforce at the same entry level as I left pre children. The experience I have gained from my role as a Board Member & Chairperson contributed greatly to obtained a really good job. If this resonates with you or you simply wish to help support your children in their education then please do consider putting your hand up to join.
I see a very bright future for the school. Please share your enthusiasm for the school with everyone you know. Word and mouth, used positively can make a great deal of difference to build a bigger & brighter school for everyone to enjoy.

Buildings
Kia ora
Just wondering if this might be the forum for letting us parents know what is going on with the buildings? or not thats ok!
1 The new walk ways part done - looks like the fence type thing is not complete - will it be? - time frame? Also carpark was going to be resurfaced - still?
2 What are the painters doing around the place at the moment? Touch ups?
3 Are we waiting for $$ or quotes or something to refurbish another room?
Thanks!
Buildings
Yes, this would be a good forum to keep you informed on what's happening with the grounds and buildings. So any questions, suggestions are very welcome.
The BOT and I are currently looking very closely at what can be done in the immediate future to both the grounds and the buildings as I think we all agree the property is in great need of improvement for both learning and asthetics. I'm getting lots of advice from the Ministry experts and our Project Managers (Ashbys) so hopefully we can start to make a difference soon.
Decisions will be made at our next BOT meeting (23 March) as to what we can do immediately - projects have already been planned and there are $$$ available. Bear in mind though these projects include electrical upgrades, fire alarms and such - fairly boring but essential. Some classroom refurbushment is on this list too. Improvements to the grounds are not funded from the Ministry. So to get our grounds looking fabulous will take considerable fundraising efforts. And yes we do want to start with getting the entrance way sorted. So be prepared - we'll be needing a fundraising committee and people who are willing to support it in the very near future.
The painters are doing the touch-ups prior to signing off on the contract, to ensure all painted areas are completed to a high standard.
Regards
Mary O'Regan
Room 8
In room 8 we have a small and incredibly diverse group of warm, funny, caring children who make coming to school a pleasure. They are very aware of each others needs and respond accordingly. Each day is different. The issues we deal with are wide ranging and include freedom of expression, dealing with disasters, the importance of family and the ever increasing pressure of the modern world. Their opinions are strong and they have an acute sense of justice.
How can you support this wonderful group of children?
Exciting school
Hey just looked at this new site - really cool - great work!
It is great to be part of this lovely "rural feel" school community at such an exciting time of rebuilding - and in the mean time our children will get plenty of attention from their teachers with such great teacher to child ratios!
Rewa Rewa Rocks!
